im a little uncertain of this, (and i tried to google the question but there was no luck), but i read in a blog for things to bring to japan that perfume is not necessary because its offensive to japanese people who dont wear it. is this true?

According to my Japanese friends, far more offensive is the terrible BO of those not considerate enough to wear deodorant. The lesson is- just don't drown yourself in the stuff and you'll be fine.

I think it boils down to the fact that Japanese people have a lower tolerance for perfume and cologne odors. So, use a conservative amount when in Japan. I've heard Japanese people complain about it abit, but mostly just for people who use too much. There are alot of Oyaji-kusai-jin around who need to use something to throw off their old man stink.

Also... there is always the gaijin card: If you are gaijin then it's ok.

Personally I hate colognes and stuff here! I don't want to smell ANYTHING when a person walks by. It's annoying and makes me gag. For this reason I have to say, don't not only bring cologne to Japan, simply stop using cologne TODAY here and now!

With that said, I will note that deoderant is extremely hard to come by in Japan in the forms we're most used to, so I do suggest bringing that.. Japanese people don't seem to get BO very much in my observation, but it might just be the people I hung out with.
