Well you have to look at the symbol being used. The first symbol is ファ (Fa) and NOT フア (FU A). That is one of the Katakana Compounds. The second portion of the symbols is smaller than the first and all the other Katakana in the sentence, well except for the ッ which is the the double consonant KK used in ファックス (FAKKUSU).
So the answer to your question is: Yes this is common but it is not a special thing to look out for since your didn't probably notice that a Compound Katakana was being used.
