In the Mini Quiz, "Kono kuruma wa kaenai to omoimasu" translates to "I don't think I will be able to buy this car".

I'm curious why the sentence uses KAENAI (negative) instead of KAERENAI (negative potential).

As is, wouldn't the sentence translate to "I don't think I will buy this car."?

I actually just confused KAU (to buy) with KAERU (to return). I was trying to conjugate from KAERU rather than KAU, so as soon as I realized that I was using the wrong verb, I answered my own question.
