こんにちは、

Course 2 Lesson 10、grammar section provides some examples of どんな　−what kind of. in Course 3, lesson 3 dialogues, there is a dialogues which should どんなの　−どんなのマヨネーズがいいですか。

It seems that both of them are correct, is there any difference in their meaning and usage?

1) どんなマヨネーズがいいですか。(DONNA MAYONEEZU GA II DESUKA) = What kind of mayonnaise is good?

2) どんなのがいいですか。(DONNANO GA II DESUKA) = What kind (of mayonnaise) is good?

The above sentences are correct and they have the same meaning.
You need to say an item right after どんな (DONNA/what kind of) as in #1. However, if you use the one pronoun as in #2, you don't need the word マヨネーズ (MAYONEEZU). Therefore, どんなのマヨネーズ (DONNA NO MAYONEEZU) is incorrect.

Let me give you some examples;

あかいかさ (AKAI KASA) = red umbrella
あかいの (AKAI NO) = the red one

すきなたべもの (SUKI NA TABEMONO) = favorite food
すきなの (SUKINA NO) = favorite one(s)

You can use the one pronoun when the subject is understood.
