 member since 2005 Dec 18 Questions: 16 Comments: 18 | I have a question about the placement of counters. In the sentence "お父さんの家に犬が二匹居ます", why is the が between the animal and the counter? Could you also say "お父さんの家に犬二匹が居ます"? And a follow-up question- why am I not doing anything more exciting than reviewing my YesJapan lessons on New Year's Eve? | ||||

お父さんの家に犬が二匹います。OTOUSAN NO IE NI INU GA NI HIKI IMASU is the correct way to say this. The reason why おとうさんの いえに いぬ にひきが います does not work is because you do not use particles after counters. The funny thing, however, is that you could say おとうさんの いえに いぬ にひき います。 OTOUSAN NO IE NI INU NIHIKI IMASU. It isn't grammatically correct, but sounds natural. The most omitted particles in Japanese are は and が, which is funny because they are the ones that most students of Japanese have trouble with. Wil YesJapan Staff | ||
